CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

Who is the Cancer Support Group?

We are a group of very special people sharing, caring, listening, praying for others, in and out of the group. Some are seasoned patients and families, others rookies, but all have courage and hope as they or their loved ones battle cancer.

Membership is open to anyone and is not limited to First UMC. There are no fees, no qualifications, just have an open mind, an open heart to receive the blessings of your fellow Christians as we share information and emotions.

Our regular meetings are the first Monday night of the month, except July and August, at 7:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, please use the south door. However, we are available anytime you need assistance. For more information please call Linda Frazee, who leads the group, at 660-665-3221. Too, if you would like to be included on our monthly Newsletter mailing list, please contact Linda by phone or mail at PO Box 733, Kirksville, MO 63501.

One of our important ministries is our Prayer Shawl Ministry. In 1998 two women created a ministry combining their love of God and knitting. The shawls are knitted or crocheted with prayers for the wearers. Once the shawls are completed, they are blessed and passed on to someone in need. This blesses the giver and the receiver-they feel the warm embrace of a loving, sheltering God. We embraced this ministry in October of 2004 and thanks to so many hearts and hands, have blessed several with this ministry. Unfortunately, there is always a need for these Prayer Shawls, instructions are available at the church office.

We are connected with the American Cancer Society through our regional office in Hannibal, Missouri. They are a wealth of information and Dana and Brenda are great ladies to work with. The ACS concentrates their efforts on research, education, advocacy, and service and has many programs available to cancer patients/survivors. Once diagnosed with cancer, you are a survivor! One of our major donations during the year is to our Relay for Life because those donations stay here locally.

Another connection is with Susan G. Komen for the Cure Mid Missouri Affiliate in Columbia, Missouri. This is our other major donation during the year, in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We go “Pink for the Cure” and, again, donating to the affiliate in Columbia keeps our money locally.

Their next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 7th, at 6:00 p.m. at Steve's Garden Deli.  Talk to Linda Frazee for more information.
